Journey back in time to the ancient city of Muyil and the Sian Ka’an waterway! Built by the native Mayans more than 1,000 years ago, it is one of the only Mayan cities set in the tropical forest. It has its own waterway that goes from the tropical forest all the way to the Caribbean Sea through a lagoon system in the north part of the Sian Kaan biosphere reserve. In this tour you will hike through the archeological city of Muyil for about 1.5 hours in which you will learn about the history, culture and the different flora and fauna that surrounds the city. Only 10% to 15% have been explored and the rest still remains buried under the jungle. You will be able to see how archeologists have been working to uncover the rest of the city and the impressive work that has already been done.

On the way we will  visit an observation tower that offers a beautiful view from above the tropical forest to the turquoise fresh water lagoons at the Sian Kaan. Afterwards, you will enjoy snacks and refreshments next to the lagoon just before taking boat across to find the man-made canal. These were created by the ancient Mayans in order to join the lagoons together for travel and to transport goods from the tropical forest to the Caribbean Sea. But get ready! Right after we go across the canal we will reach the second biggest freshwater lagoon in the peninsula of Yucatan “Chunyaxche”.

You will be amazed by the pristine turquoise waters as you go by boat to reach the twisting maze of mangroves and vegetation bursting with color in the second canal. We will also visit one more ruin, the ancient Xlahpak temple known as the “Watch of the Lake”. This is a ruin you can still enter and is next to the natural water canal where you will enjoy the main attraction of our tour and what everyone has been waiting for…

“THE FLOTATION”

This is the most relaxing part of the trip-all you have to do is sit back and let yourself literally be taken by the peaceful current of this canal at a speed of 2.5kms per hour. For about 40 minutes the current gently carries you downstream. With the soundtrack of tropical birdsongs and the tranquility of the area, you’re guaranteed to feel at peace in all the natural beauty.

Legend says that these spring-fed waters have magical healing powers. Legends aside, we can assure you that this tour will become the highlight of your vacation!

After our journey you can look forward to a traditional Mayan meal made by an authentic Mayan family on their ranch.
