PUNTA ALLEN BIOSPHERE TOUR
Come travel though one of Mexico’s largest protected areas of coastal wetlands, savannah, tropical forest, mangroves, and marine area to the small fishing village of Punta Allen. For those who are nature lovers and environmentalists, you will delight in this relaxing and informative adventure outside of the large tourist areas of the Mayan Riviera.
The Sian Ka’an, roughly translating to “Origin of the Sky”, Biosphere covers around 1.3 million acres of land and water including part of the 700 mile long Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The Biosphere is home to many diverse species of flora, fauna, and marine life. Access to Punta Allen begins by roadway where we will then transfer to a small boat for quicker travel and incredible sightseeing. With over 300 species of birds, more than 100 documented mammals, 850 vascular plants, and over 40 recorded species of amphibians and reptiles you are bound to take in some spectacular sights on this journey. This area is home to salt-water crocodiles, gentle manatees, and playful dolphins which are often able to be seen directly from the boat. Throughout this tour your guide will show you different places of interest and explain the diversity of the environment and how all these complex ecosystems link together.
Before arriving to Punta Allen you will have the chance to explore the wonderful waters on your own in a naturally protected sand bar just off the coast. Snorkel along the reef to see some varieties of the 400 plus species of fish, sea turtles, and rays.
Once we arrive at Punta Allen lunch will be served buffet style and with advance request you will have the option to try the local specialty; langosta espinosa or the ‘spiny lobster’. Different from the American lobster, these lobsters do not have claws and the meat is found in the tail of the lobster. This lobster is the main catch of Punta Allen and what the small fishing village is known for.
After a satiating lunch and a few Coronas, we return to the boat and begin our journey back through the Biosphere and home to your accommodations.
